Here's the gist: Chlorthalidone is a water pill that helps lower your blood pressure by flushing out extra salt and fluid. The concern with coltsfoot is that, in large or concentrated amounts, it might work against your blood pressure treatment, meaning your numbers could creep back up and the medicine may not do its job as well.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on anecdotal reports, not solid human studies, and it mainly applies to excessive doses of coltsfoot. Frankly, my bigger worry with coltsfoot is the liver-toxic compounds it can contain. Before mixing the two, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Coltsfoot is a traditional herb long used to soothe coughs and clear mucus, but solid human evidence for these uses is lacking. More importantly, the raw plant can contain liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so it carries real safety concerns and is best avoided unless you use a product certified to be free of these compounds.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
