What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Coltsfoot against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Coltsfoot Glycerite Liquid Extract. Glycerin is listed as an inactive ingredient — it's the liquid carrier that helps deliver the coltsfoot extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We have no effectiveness ratings on file for coltsfoot, so the evidence for how well it works isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Here's the main concern: coltsfoot naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that can damage your liver and lungs. The facts advise using only certified PA-free products, if at all.
Even with certified PA-free material, chronic use has been linked to veno-occlusive disease — a condition where liver blood vessels scar and narrow, causing pain, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and eventually liver enlargement. Lung damage with pulmonary high blood pressure is also a documented risk.
During pregnancy, coltsfoot is rated as likely unsafe due to potential liver toxicity and harm to the baby. While breastfeeding, it's also rated likely unsafe because toxic alkaloids can pass into breast milk.
Do not use this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check it with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin, aspirin, or enoxaparin (Moderate severity); blood pressure medications (Moderate); or seizure and antibiotic drugs like carbamazepine, phenytoin, or rifampin that speed up liver processing (Moderate).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Coltsfoot carries serious safety and interaction risks. If you're taking blood thinners, blood pressure medications, or seizure or antibiotic drugs, talk to your pharmacist before considering this product.
The liver and lung toxicity risk is real — even certified PA-free versions warrant caution. Check with a pharmacist or doctor about whether this is right for you.

Coltsfoot by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Coltsfoot by TerraVita has documented interactions with multiple medication types, and there's an important safety concern underlying all of them: this product may contain liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that your body can process into even more harmful compounds.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious interactions involve blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and heparin). Coltsfoot can slow down blood clotting on its own, so adding it to these medications raises your bleeding risk.
This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Coltsfoot also interacts with blood pressure medications (Moderate severity) — excessive doses may interfere with how they work — and with certain seizure and antibiotic medications that speed up liver processing (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, and others). Those drugs can push the liver to convert coltsfoot's toxic alkaloids into even more dangerous metabolites, a Moderate concern.
Altogether, these interactions span 371 individual medications.

Coltsfoot Glycerite Liquid Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Concomitant use might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Coltsfoot has been reported to inhibit platelet aggregation; avoid concomitant use. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, excessive doses of coltsfoot may interfere with antihypertensive or cardiovascular therapy.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Inducers
Hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites. Some drugs that induce CYP3A4 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin, rifabutin (Mycobutin), and others.
