Cordyceps Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Cordyceps Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Cordyceps Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient extract: fresh Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) mycelium — the vegetative part of this medicinal mushroom. The liquid form also contains water, alcohol, and myceliated brown rice (rice that's been colonized by the mushroom culture).
Does it work?
No specific claim
The evidence for cordyceps is mixed and often limited. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — don't count on it to boost endurance or strength.
For sexual dysfunction, asthma, lung cancer, COPD, and irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. If you're considering cordyceps for one of these purposes, talk with your doctor about whether the research supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cordyceps appears to be generally well tolerated when taken for up to a year, though the safety evidence overall is limited and product quality varies widely between brands. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — abdominal discomfort, constipation, or diarrhea — though these are uncommon, and taking it with food may help.
There's one case report of liver inflammation in a patient taking a cordyceps product, but it's unclear whether cordyceps itself or a contaminant was responsible. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided.
The same goes for breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using cordyceps while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check your exact medications if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk), immunosuppressants (Moderate risk), or testosterone therapy (Minor risk). Use the medication checker on this page to confirm your specific drugs, then talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Cordyceps is generally well tolerated short-term, but the evidence for what it actually does is weak or absent for most claims. If you take blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or testosterone therapy, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
For anyone else, the main risk is an upset stomach — and the variable quality between brands.

Cordyceps Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Host Defense Mushrooms Cordyceps Extract may interact with a few important medication types.
The most serious concern is blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel). Lab and animal research suggests cordyceps may thin the blood further and increase bleeding risk, though this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet — that's a Moderate concern worth flagging to your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Another Moderate interaction involves immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen your immune system, often given after transplant or for autoimmune conditions). Animal research hints that cordyceps might amp up your immune function in a way that interferes with these medications' effects.
There's also a Minor theoretical concern with testosterone supplements or hormone treatments, since cordyceps may raise testosterone levels on its own.
Altogether, these interactions span 249 individual medications. We don't have enough data to check every ingredient combination, so before you add this to your routine, run it through the medication checker below or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take any blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or hormone therapies.

fresh Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) mycelium extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cordyceps may increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that cordyceps extract inhibits platelet aggregation and function. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that cordyceps stimulates the immune system. However, limited clinical research suggests that taking cordyceps may lower the necessary therapeutic dose of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, which suggests that cordyceps may have an immunosuppressive effect.
Testosterone
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps and testosterone might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that cordyceps can increase testosterone levels. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
