Cordyceps is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth for up to a year. The most common side effects are mild—abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, and throat discomfort—and they're uncommon.

Some people found these eased when they took it after eating. There is one case report of liver inflammation (cholestatic hepatitis) in a 64-year-old man using a cordyceps product; he recovered after stopping it, but it's unclear whether cordyceps itself caused it or a contaminant did.

In vitro and animal research suggests that cordyceps extract inhibits platelet aggregation and function. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
