How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Common side effects include belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting — especially at higher doses (10–30 grams daily).
A small number of people have reported dizziness or headache. Very rarely, people with bipolar disorder taking glutamine have developed mania or hypomania.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use only under your doctor's supervision. There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplemental glutamine doses during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it — talk with them before taking it while pregnant or nursing.
