CytoFlora contains 11 active bacterial strains, most presented as lysates (inactive, processed forms of the bacteria). The lineup includes three Bifidobacterium species (B. bifidum, B. longum infantis, and B. longum), five Lactobacillus species (L. acidophilus, L. helveticus, L. reuteri, L. plantarum, L. casei, L. salivarius, and L. paracasei), and one Proprietary Blend.
These are probiotics—friendly bacteria meant to support digestive and immune health. The liquid form also contains water and alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?

The evidence for what CytoFlora can do varies by strain. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori (a stomach bacteria), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. The other strains in this product either have insufficient evidence to rate their effectiveness or show no evidence of benefit for the conditions studied.
For many uses people turn to probiotics for—like hay fever, anxiety, cognitive decline, or athletic performance—the data simply isn't there yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Probiotics in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though those who are seriously ill or have weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and rarely diarrhea have been reported with probiotics, though these aren't common.
In very rare cases, some Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species have caused serious bloodstream infections (bacteremia or sepsis), but this has almost always occurred in critically ill patients, not in otherwise healthy people. A single case of a dry cough was reported in a clinical trial.
Safety data are limited overall, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a compromised immune system.

Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
