What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: ribose (labeled as Bioenergy Ribose), a five-carbon sugar that your cells use to produce energy. Each serving provides 750 mg of ribose in an unflavored powder form with no other inactive ingredients listed.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Ribose's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: cellular energy and recovery support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia, Congestive heart failure (CHF), Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, Coronary heart disease (CHD) — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Ribose is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Ribose is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for McArdle disease.
  • Also on file: Ribose is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Coronary heart disease (CHD), Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Congestive heart failure (CHF), Fibromyalgia, and more.

The evidence for ribose is mixed and limited. It's rated possibly ineffective for athletic performance and for McArdle disease (a rare muscle disorder).

For restless legs syndrome, muscle soreness, congestive heart failure, and recovery after bypass surgery, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not. If you're considering it for one of these purposes, talk with your doctor about whether a trial makes sense for you.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Ribose is generally well tolerated in the short term (up to about a month), but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The main concern is that it can lower blood sugar.

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, headache, and gastrointestinal discomfort — and in some cases, low blood sugar itself. A small number of people reported lightheadedness, increased appetite, or mild anxiety; lowering the dose resolved these symptoms.

There isn't enough safety data to use ribose during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if either applies to you.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ribose.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check these medication types before using D-Ribose: insulin (Moderate severity — ribose can boost insulin's blood-sugar-lowering effect) and antidiabetes drugs like metformin and sulfonylureas (Moderate severity — ribose may increase the risk of low blood sugar). If you're on either, confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

D-Ribose may appeal to athletes or people with certain heart or muscle conditions, but the evidence that it actually works is weak or absent. The real caution is if you take insulin or any blood sugar medication — ribose can lower your glucose further.

Check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, and know that long-term safety remains unclear.

Formula

Ribose is the vital structural backbone of critical cellular compounds called purines and pyrimidines. Our bodies must have an adequate supply of purines and pyrimidines to form major cellular constituents such as our genetic material (DNA and RNA), numerous cofactors and certain vitamins. But more importantly, ribose is the backbone of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-the source for all cellular energy. Ribose is the starting point and the rate limiting compound in the synthesis of these fundamental cellular compounds and the availability of ribose determines the rate at which they can be made by our cells and tissues.

Suggested/Recommended/Usage/Directions

Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, take one serving (1 scoop) with 8-16 ounces of water or suitable beverage. Taken 1-3 times daily for best use. Optimal dosage may vary for each individual: consult with your qualified health professional to see if a higher dose is right for you.

General Statements

Bioenergy Ribose is unique in this metabolic role. No other compound can replace ribose in the important job of regulating the metabolic processes involved in synthesizing purines and pyrimidines. And without these vital structural components, our bodies would quickly run out of energy, could not make proteins and our cells would lose the ability to replicate. Energy recovery and tissue repair are slower in heart and muscle cells, especially after overwork or exercise. Ribose drives the process that replenishes ATP and other energy components in these cells.

D-Ribose 750 mg Unflavored by Muscle Empire: Common Questions

Does D-Ribose 750 mg Unflavored by Muscle Empire interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, D-Ribose 750 mg Unflavored has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
D-Ribose 750 mg Unflavored contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take D-Ribose if I have diabetes or take blood sugar medication?
Not without checking first. Ribose can lower your blood glucose, and combined with insulin or antidiabetes drugs, that risk goes up. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific medications and whether ribose is safe for you.
Does D-Ribose actually improve athletic performance or reduce muscle soreness?
The evidence doesn't support it. Studies rate ribose as possibly ineffective for athletic performance, and we don't have reliable evidence that it reduces muscle soreness, even though people often try it for that reason.
What are the most common side effects?
Diarrhea, nausea, headache, and gastrointestinal discomfort are the most reported. A few people have also felt lightheaded, more anxious, or had increased appetite — but lowering the dose resolved these in the studies where it was tried.
Can I take D-Ribose while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data, so the guidance is to avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if either applies.
How long can I safely take D-Ribose?
It's been studied as generally well tolerated for up to about a month, but we don't have good long-term safety data. If you're thinking of using it beyond that, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
