Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: D-Ribose, a naturally occurring sugar that your cells use to make energy. D-Ribose is often marketed for athletic performance and muscle recovery, though the evidence for those uses is limited (see Effectiveness, below).

The powder form makes it easy to mix into drinks or food. There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Ribose product and its label doesn't state a use — see Ribose's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for D-Ribose is mixed and often not strong enough to draw firm conclusions. For athletic performance and muscle soreness, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For McArdle disease (a rare muscle disorder), evidence also points to possibly ineffective. For restless legs syndrome, congestive heart failure, and recovery after bypass surgery, there simply isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works.

If you're considering this for one of those uses, it's worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist what the current research actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

D-Ribose is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth for up to about a month. The most common side effects are diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Some people have also reported lightheadedness, increased appetite, and mild anxiety — and in one study, lowering the dose resolved the anxiety. Lowering the dose has also fixed nausea in some cases.

There isn't enough safety information to know whether D-Ribose is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so the evidence advises against use in both. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ribose.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take insulin or any antidiabetes medication, check with your own pharmacist or doctor before starting D-Ribose. Both are Moderate interactions, and the risk is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

No other medication types are documented to interact with the ingredients we checked.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

D-Ribose is generally well tolerated short-term, but it can lower blood sugar — which is important if you take insulin or diabetes medications. The evidence that it boosts athletic performance or muscle recovery is weak or absent.

If you're taking any blood sugar medication or considering this for a specific health goal, it's worth a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist to see if it makes sense for you.

D-Ribose by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does D-Ribose by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, D-Ribose has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
D-Ribose contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will D-Ribose help my athletic performance or muscle soreness?
The evidence doesn't support it. Studies suggest D-Ribose is possibly ineffective for athletic performance, and there isn't enough reliable data on muscle soreness to say one way or the other. If you're looking to improve performance, it's worth asking your trainer or doctor what evidence-backed options are available.
What are the most common side effects?
When taken by mouth, the most common side effects are diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, and low blood sugar. Some people also report lightheadedness, increased appetite, and mild anxiety. Lowering the dose has helped some people resolve nausea or anxiety.
Is it safe to take D-Ribose while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety information, so the evidence advises against D-Ribose in both pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
How long can I safely take D-Ribose?
The data shows D-Ribose is generally well tolerated for up to about 1 month. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so it's a good idea to discuss duration with your doctor or pharmacist if you're planning to take it for longer.
Can I take D-Ribose if I have diabetes?
Be cautious. D-Ribose lowers blood sugar, so if you're taking insulin or antidiabetes medication, there's a Moderate risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Check with your own doctor or pharmacist about your specific medications before starting.
What is D-Ribose and why is it in this product?
D-Ribose is a natural sugar that your cells use to produce energy. It's often marketed to support athletic performance and muscle recovery, though the evidence for those benefits is limited or unclear.
