What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 6 active ingredients.

This product contains 6 active ingredients: BC30 Bacillus coagulans (a live probiotic organism), plus four enzymes that help break down carbohydrates — invertase, cellulase, hemicellulase, and alpha-galactosidase. Together they're meant to support digestion and reduce gas.

The remaining ingredients are inactive — maltodextrin, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, dextrin, citric acid, titanium dioxide, sodium benzoate, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and mannitol — which form and preserve the capsule.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: digestive health and gas reduction support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Constipation, Diarrhea, Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Antibiotic-associated diarrhea — and 3 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Bacillus Coagulans is rated "Possibly Effective" for Constipation (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bacillus Coagulans is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Bacillus Coagulans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Diarrhea, Dyspepsia, Flatulence, and more.

BC30 Bacillus coagulans is possibly effective for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For antibiotic-associated diarrhea, athletic performance, cancer, and fatty liver disease, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to say whether it works.

We hold no effectiveness ratings for the enzymes in this product, so the evidence on whether they reduce gas isn't established in our data.

The evidence, ingredient by ingredient Bacillus Coagulans

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

BC30 Bacillus coagulans is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though the quality and safety evidence vary across probiotic products. There isn't enough reliable safety data overall, so talk to your doctor before using this supplement.

A rare concern with live probiotic products is that they might cause infection in people who are severely ill, immunocompromised, have central catheters, or are premature infants — but this risk is very low in people with healthy immune systems and no catheters.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bacillus Coagulans.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any antibiotics. Taking them at the same time may reduce how well the probiotic works, so timing matters — separate the doses by a few hours.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're dealing with constipation or IBS and want to try a probiotic, BC30 may be worth discussing with your doctor. The big thing to watch: don't take this at the same time as antibiotics — space them a few hours apart so the antibiotic doesn't kill the live organisms.

Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or any serious illness.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.

Digestive Advantage Daily Probiotics + Gas Defense by Schiff: Common Questions

Does Digestive Advantage Daily Probiotics + Gas Defense by Schiff interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Digestive Advantage Daily Probiotics + Gas Defense has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Digestive Advantage Daily Probiotics + Gas Defense contains 6 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does this actually help with bloating and gas?
The probiotic in this product is possibly effective for IBS, which often involves gas and bloating. The enzymes are meant to help break down carbohydrates that cause gas, but we don't have effectiveness data for them in our system. Your results may depend on why you're experiencing gas in the first place.
What is BC30 Bacillus coagulans?
It's a live probiotic organism — a beneficial bacterium that's been studied for digestive health. It survives in the stomach better than some other probiotics, which is why it's included in this product.
Is it safe to take if I'm on antibiotics?
You can take both, but not at the same time. Antibiotics will kill the live organisms in the probiotic, making it less effective. Space them a few hours apart — ask your pharmacist for the best timing with your specific antibiotic.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for this product in pregnancy or lactation. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist — they can weigh the potential benefits and any risks for your situation.
Who shouldn't use this?
People with a severely weakened immune system, serious illness, central catheters, or very premature infants should check with their doctor first — live probiotic products carry a small risk of infection in these groups. Everyone else should still run through their medications with their pharmacist before starting.
