Moderate evidence
DL-Malic Acid is possibly effective for dry mouth. For acne, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), fatigue, fibromyalgia, and psoriasis, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Malic acid in food amounts is generally well tolerated. However, supplement doses haven't been well studied, so the safety profile at higher amounts isn't clear.
Orally, diarrhea and nausea have been reported in one study, though it's unclear whether those came from the malic acid or the magnesium in that combination product. If applied to skin, malic acid can cause irritation and peeling; some people have even experienced hives or contact dermatitis when exposed to high amounts in foods after patch testing.
Malic acid is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement during these times.
