What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol), commonly known as deanol. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose and gelatin, with silica and vegetable magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients to hold everything together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for DMAE is thin. Studies show it's likely ineffective for Alzheimer disease and tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder from certain older psychiatric drugs).
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't. If you're thinking about using it for one of these reasons, that's worth discussing with your doctor.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Deanol is generally well tolerated by some adults, though the evidence is limited and side effects do occur. Common ones include abdominal cramps, pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
Less common but reported effects are headache, insomnia, confusion, mood changes, and vivid or lucid dreams. At higher doses (above 1000 mg daily), mood changes like depression and overstimulation have been reported, especially in people with psychiatric conditions — and there's concern that it may worsen schizophrenia symptoms at very high doses.
Safety data during pregnancy and lactation is not adequate, so it's best to avoid use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before taking this supplement, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on anticholinergic drugs (allergy or motion-sickness medications, certain urinary drugs, or antispasmodics) or cholinergic drugs (medications that boost acetylcholine). These interactions are minor but documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
DMAE is one to check with your doctor or pharmacist before you take it, especially if you're on anticholinergic or cholinergic medications — the interaction data spans over 200 individual drugs across those two categories. The evidence for what it actually does is weak, and side effects from stomach upset to mood changes are real.
Talk it over with your healthcare provider to see if it makes sense for you.

DMAE 100 mg by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
DMAE by Puritan's Pride contains one active ingredient, deanol, which interacts with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with anticholinergic drugs (like certain antihistamines, antispasmodics, and urinary medications) — deanol might theoretically decrease how well these drugs work, since deanol is thought to raise acetylcholine levels in the brain.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Deanol also interacts with cholinergic drugs (medications that work by boosting acetylcholine), potentially increasing both their effects and their side effects. This is a minor interaction but worth knowing about.
Altogether, these interactions span 219 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact prescription and over-the-counter medications through the checker on this page — especially if you take anything for allergies, muscle spasms, urinary problems, or conditions affecting how your nerves and muscles talk to each other.
