Deanol is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do happen. The most common are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

Less common but reported are constipation, headache, insomnia, overstimulation, lucid dreams, confusion, and depression. Higher doses — over 1,000 mg daily — have been linked to mood changes including depression and hypomania in people with psychiatric conditions, and even 1,500 mg daily may worsen schizophrenic symptoms in people with chronic schizophrenia.

Safety during pregnancy isn't established, so the data advises against use during pregnancy. There isn't enough safety data during breastfeeding either — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
