What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: cordyceps sinensis fungus extract in a dried form. Cordyceps is a fungus traditionally used in herbal medicine, and this extract is the sole active component you're getting in each dose.
The liquid also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients that help deliver and preserve the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for cordyceps' effectiveness is mixed and often weak. For athletic performance, the research suggests it's possibly ineffective—meaning studies haven't shown a clear benefit.
For sexual dysfunction, asthma, arrhythmia, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there simply isn't enough reliable evidence to know either way. If you're considering this for any of those uses, the data we have doesn't support a strong case.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cordyceps is generally well tolerated when used short-term, though the overall safety evidence is limited and product quality varies widely. In clinical research, the most common side effects were mild—abdominal discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea—and these were uncommon.
Some people also reported dry mouth and throat discomfort. Taking it with food may help reduce these symptoms.
There's one case report of liver inflammation (hepatitis) in someone taking a cordyceps-containing product, though it's unclear whether cordyceps or a contaminant caused it. If you develop jaundice or abdominal pain while using this, stop and contact your doctor.
There isn't enough safety data to use cordyceps during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel—cordyceps may increase bleeding risk. If you take immunosuppressants, especially cyclosporine, it could interfere with how well they work.
And if you're using testosterone or testosterone-like treatments, mention cordyceps so they can watch for any additive effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Dong Chong Xia Cao may be worth considering if you're interested in trying cordyceps for athletic performance or general wellness, but the effectiveness evidence is weak or absent for most uses. If you take blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or testosterone, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this—cordyceps may interact with those.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding aren't safe times to use it. The quality of cordyceps products varies, so you're taking on some uncertainty there too.

Dong Chong Xia Cao by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dong Chong Xia Cao by Hawaii Pharm, which contains cordyceps fungus extract, does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel)—cordyceps may theoretically increase bleeding risk, though this hasn't been reported in people yet. The evidence comes from lab and animal studies showing cordyceps can slow platelet clumping.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Cordyceps may also interfere with immunosuppressant medications, particularly cyclosporine. Animal research suggests cordyceps stimulates your immune system, which could work against drugs designed to suppress it and may lower the dose your body needs.
Again, human cases haven't been documented, but the concern is real enough to warrant a check before you start.
There's a minor theoretical interaction with testosterone or testosterone-like treatments, based on animal findings that cordyceps can raise testosterone levels. The practical significance of this isn't clear.
Altogether, these interactions span 249 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions before taking this product.

Cordyceps sinensis Fungus Extract, Dry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cordyceps may increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that cordyceps extract inhibits platelet aggregation and function. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that cordyceps stimulates the immune system. However, limited clinical research suggests that taking cordyceps may lower the necessary therapeutic dose of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, which suggests that cordyceps may have an immunosuppressive effect.
Testosterone
Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps and testosterone might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that cordyceps can increase testosterone levels. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
