How safe is it?
Well-documented data
This is the critical issue: epazote contains ascaridole, a compound that is toxic and has a very narrow margin between an effective dose and a dangerous one. Orally, the product is considered unsafe.
The most common side effects are dizziness, headache, mouth and skin irritation, vertigo, and vomiting. Rare but serious effects include convulsions, temporary deafness, kidney and liver damage, paralysis, and circulatory collapse.
Do not use during pregnancy—it may stimulate the uterus and is potentially toxic. It is unsafe during breastfeeding as well.
