Here's the connection worth knowing about. The hydrochlorothiazide in your Moduretic can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash with less sun than usual. Chenopodium oil and the epazote plant it comes from can do the same thing. Put the two together and, at least on paper, your skin's reaction to the sun could be stronger.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not something proven in real patients. Still, since chenopodium oil isn't recommended for swallowing anyway (it can be quite toxic), please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it. If you do spend time outdoors, sunscreen and covering up are smart habits.

Chenopodium oil is a strong-smelling essential oil from the epazote plant that was historically used to treat intestinal worms. It contains ascaridole, a compound that is quite toxic, and overdoses have caused serious harm, so it is no longer recommended for internal use. Safer modern deworming medicines exist, so talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using this oil.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
