Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 5 of its 5 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Barlean's Evening Primrose Oil is a softgel containing five active ingredients: polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, gamma-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid. These are all fatty acids naturally present in evening primrose seed oil.

The product also contains organic evening primrose oil itself as an inactive ingredient and a softgel capsule shell.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Oleic Acid's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Oleic Acid for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Coronary heart disease (CHD) — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Hypercholesterolemia — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence we hold covers only oleic acid, one of the five actives. Oleic acid is rated possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and coronary heart disease (CHD).

We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for the other four ingredients in this product, so we can't speak to what the full evening primrose oil formula may do beyond what oleic acid alone is shown to support.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Oleic acid from food sources — like olive oil — is generally recognized as safe in normal amounts. However, the safety data for concentrated oleic acid supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you. We don't have adverse effects listed for oleic acid in our data.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Oleic Acid.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications), this product deserves a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist — oleic acid may increase their effect. For the other four active ingredients in this product, we hold no interaction data, so we can't flag any drug types to watch for them.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.

If you're looking to support cholesterol levels or heart health, the oleic acid in this product has some research behind it. But if you take antidiabetes medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — oleic acid may strengthen how well those drugs work.

Anyone pregnant or nursing should discuss this supplement with their healthcare provider before starting.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does evening primrose oil from Barlean's actually work?
We have effectiveness evidence only for oleic acid, one of the five active ingredients — it's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol and coronary heart disease. We don't have data on file for the other four ingredients, so we can't tell you whether the full formula works for other uses.

The inactive ingredients are organic evening primrose oil and the softgel capsule itself. The five active ingredients are the fatty acids that make up the oil.
