The evidence for gentian isn't established in our data. It's rated as having insufficient reliable evidence for wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis (sinus inflammation), and gastritis (stomach inflammation).

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian root is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach and hasn't been studied much at higher doses. In one trial where people took gentian tincture combined with turmeric and ginger, a number of participants reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating, and several stopped taking it because of these symptoms.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend gentian during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then. The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable safety information, so avoid use while nursing.
