GI Flora Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking GI Flora against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of GI Flora by Allergy Research Group
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
GI Flora contains four active ingredients: three live bacterial strains (Bifidobacterium longum UABL-14, Lactobacillus casei UALc-03, and Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14) and fructooligosaccharides, a prebiotic fiber that may feed beneficial gut bacteria. The other ingredients are inactive—a capsule material, rice flour, and a lubricant—to help the formulation work.
These are probiotics, meaning they're designed to deliver beneficial bacteria to your digestive tract.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product varies by condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and Helicobacter pylori and bacterial vaginosis support, though the data aren't definitive.
For the other conditions listed—Bifidobacterium longum and allergies, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance—we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether they work. If you're considering GI Flora for a specific health concern, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to see whether the research supports your goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people. That said, if you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or critically ill, caution is needed—rare cases of infection from these bacteria have been reported in vulnerable patients, including preterm infants and people with severe underlying conditions.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort have been reported rarely. Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, though safety data are limited.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is also possibly safe in pregnancy; we don't have lactation data on file for it. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotics, space them apart from this probiotic—don't take them at the same time. Antibiotics can kill the live organisms in GI Flora, reducing its effectiveness.
Ask your healthcare provider how long to wait between doses.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GI Flora may be worth considering if you have IBS or antibiotic-associated diarrhea, since Lactobacillus acidophilus shows some promise for those. If you take antibiotics regularly or have a weakened immune system, check with your doctor first.

GI Flora by Allergy Research Group Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GI Flora by Allergy Research Group contains three live probiotic strains—Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus casei—two of which have documented interactions with antibiotics.
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus carry a moderate-severity interaction with antibiotic drugs: taking them at the same time may reduce how well the probiotics work, since antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the supplement. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
To protect the probiotic benefit, separate your doses. If you're prescribed antibiotics, ask your doctor or pharmacist how long to wait before restarting the probiotic—typically a few hours, but it depends on the antibiotic.
We couldn't check Lactobacillus casei UALc-03 because we don't hold interaction data for it. Use the medication checker below to confirm your exact prescriptions before you start.
