GI Flora contains four active ingredients: three live bacterial strains (Bifidobacterium longum UABL-14, Lactobacillus casei UALc-03, and Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14) and fructooligosaccharides, a prebiotic fiber that may feed beneficial gut bacteria. The other ingredients are inactive—a capsule material, rice flour, and a lubricant—to help the formulation work.
These are probiotics, meaning they're designed to deliver beneficial bacteria to your digestive tract.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product varies by condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and Helicobacter pylori and bacterial vaginosis support, though the data aren't definitive.
For the other conditions listed—Bifidobacterium longum and allergies, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance—we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether they work. If you're considering GI Flora for a specific health concern, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to see whether the research supports your goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people. That said, if you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or critically ill, caution is needed—rare cases of infection from these bacteria have been reported in vulnerable patients, including preterm infants and people with severe underlying conditions.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort have been reported rarely. Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, though safety data are limited.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is also possibly safe in pregnancy; we don't have lactation data on file for it. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.

Bifidobacterium longum UABL-14
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
