Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Moxifloxacin
Moxifloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Longum interacts with.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to understand: this interaction runs in one direction. Moxifloxacin (Avelox) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that it can't tell the difference between the bacteria making you sick and the friendly Bifidobacterium longum in your probiotic. So if you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic may simply wipe out a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms before they can settle in.
The good news is your moxifloxacin still works just fine, this doesn't make the antibiotic weaker or more risky. You'd just be wasting your probiotic. A simple fix is to space them out by at least 2 hours. This is a theoretical, pharmacology-based concern, not something proven in studies, but separating the doses is easy and sensible. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure about timing.

“The supplement list for moxifloxacin (Avelox), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, deserves genuine care, and the everyday items are the surprising part. About Bifidobacterium Longum
What is Bifidobacterium Longum?
- Digestive health and regularity
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Diarrhea (including antibiotic-related)
- Immune support
- Mood and stress (gut-brain axis)
Bifidobacterium longum is a 'friendly' bacterium found naturally in the human gut and used as a probiotic. It is generally well tolerated and is most studied for digestive issues, though evidence for many uses is still limited or mixed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
About Moxifloxacin
What Is Moxifloxacin Used For?
Brand name: Avelox
Moxifloxacin tablets and intravenous (IV) injection are approved for adults 18 and older to treat bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin infections, complicated abdominal infections, plague, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Note: moxifloxacin should only be used for sinusitis and chronic bronchitis flare-ups when no other antibiotic option is available, due to the risk of serious side effects.
Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution (eye drops) — including the brand Vigamox — is a separate, topical formulation used only in the eye to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible bacteria. The eye drop form is not used for body-wide infections.
