HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Glutamine 500 by ProCaps Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses for protein synthesis and immune support. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, an inactive ingredient that holds the supplement together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence supports glutamine for sickle cell disease—it's rated effective for that condition. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, meaning the research suggests it may help but isn't yet conclusive.
Our data holds no effectiveness information for other uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and belly pain.
A few rare cases of dizziness, mania, and hypomania have been reported, mainly in people taking very high doses or those with bipolar disorder. If you have kidney or liver disease, use glutamine only under medical supervision.
Because not enough safety data exists for pregnancy and breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it during those times.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), you'll want to double-check with your pharmacist before starting glutamine. The theoretical risk is Moderate severity.
No other medication interactions are documented in our data for this ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness and your doctor recommends it. If you take anticonvulsant medications, check with your pharmacist first.
People with kidney or liver disease need to talk with their doctor before starting. In all cases, a quick conversation with your pharmacist can make sure it's right for you.

Formula
500 mg Glutamine
Glutamine 500 is a pure source of the conditionally essential amino acid glutamine. Amino acids play a multitude of roles in chemistry of our bodies. They are essential building blocks of all protein-based tissues and are also required for the creation of digestive enzymes and key molecules, such as hemoglobin and the hormones insulin, thyroxin and epinephrine. Glutamine is perhaps the body's most versatile amino acid. It is the most abundant amino acid present in muscle tissue and thus essential for healthy skeletal and cardiac muscle function. Glutamine also plays a unique role in promoting the healthy mucosal lining and barrier function of the intestines and digestive system. Glutamine also plays a special role in the liver, kidneys and throughout our body by promoting nitrogen balance and acid-base balance. Glutamine also represents an important energy source for specialized cells of the nervous and immune systems. Most importantly, glutamine is one of only three amino acid building blocks of glutathione, our body's most powerful, internal, protective compound. In short, glutamine's long list of critical functions has made it one of the most popular amino acids to supplement.

Glutamine 500 by ProCaps Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Glutamine 500 by ProCaps Laboratories contains L-glutamine, which has one documented interaction category in our data.
The main concern is with anticonvulsant medications (drugs used to prevent seizures). Theoretically, glutamine might work against how these medications control seizures, because glutamine is broken down into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that could counteract anticonvulsants.
However, this interaction hasn't been reported in actual patients yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we hold interaction data for the ingredient we checked, this theoretical effect is classified as Moderate severity. Altogether, these interactions span 50 individual medications.
To be safe, if you take anticonvulsants, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting glutamine. Use the medication checker on this page to run through your exact prescriptions.
