Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 3 active ingredients. The main one is green black walnut, which is the fruit (nut) and related plant parts of the black walnut tree.
The other two are hull Grain Alcohol and Alcohol, which serve as the liquid base and extraction medium. The inactive ingredients are water and grain alcohol — these are excipients that make up the liquid formulation.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for black walnut is limited. For coronary heart disease and wound healing, we don't have reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works.
That doesn't mean it doesn't — it means the studies either aren't there, aren't strong enough, or are mixed. If you're considering this for a specific health goal, your pharmacist can point you toward what research does exist and help you weigh it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Black walnut is generally well tolerated when you take it by mouth, but there are a few things to know. The leaf, bark, and hull contain compounds called tannins that can cause stomach upset in some people.
There's also a rare risk: daily use of related walnut species' bark has been linked to tongue cancer and lip changes, though that's not proven for black walnut specifically. Tree nuts — including black walnuts — can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people, and tree nut allergy is common in the U.S.
Short-term use is considered acceptable for most adults, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. During pregnancy, safety data are limited — your doctor or pharmacist should weigh the benefits and unknowns for your situation.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough information, so talk with your healthcare provider before using it.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. That said, we don't hold interaction data for the Alcohol and hull Grain Alcohol in this product, so if you take medications affected by alcohol, mention this product to your pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Green Black Walnut Extra Strength may appeal to you if you're drawn to traditional herbal approaches, but the evidence for its intended uses is thin. If you have a tree nut allergy, steer clear.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your pharmacist or doctor first — the data just aren't there yet.
Anyone taking it long-term should be aware that we don't know much about safety beyond short-term use.
