Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: GTF chromium at 200 micrograms per capsule. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, and the formula also includes vegetable magnesium stearate and silica as inactive ingredients to hold it together and keep it flowing smoothly.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency. For type 2 diabetes, the evidence suggests it may be effective, though the data isn't as strong — some research shows it can help lower blood sugar, especially in people whose diabetes is not well controlled.
For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence we hold shows chromium is possibly ineffective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Serious side effects like kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown, or low platelet counts are rare. Skin reactions, including rashes and itching, have been reported in some people, particularly those with a contact allergy to chromium.
During pregnancy, small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are considered likely safe. For lactation, the limited data suggest it's likely safe.
However, extra supplement doses beyond what's in a prenatal vitamin should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them, because higher doses haven't been well studied in pregnant and nursing women.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take insulin or antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar could drop too low), levothyroxine or other thyroid hormones (chromium may reduce how much you absorb), or regular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin (which may increase chromium levels in your body).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GTF chromium may help if you have a chromium deficiency or type 2 diabetes not well controlled by other means. If you take insulin, antidiabetes drugs, levothyroxine, or regular doses of pain relievers, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interactions matter.
It's generally well tolerated, but high doses over time carry more risk than the typical supplement dose.

GTF Chromium 200 mcg by Bluebonnet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bluebonnet's GTF Chromium 200 mcg interacts with several common medication types, most seriously with drugs used to manage blood sugar and thyroid hormone replacement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium may work together with antidiabetes drugs and insulin to lower your blood sugar further than intended, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The concern is real enough that if you're on either of these, your blood sugar should be monitored more closely.
Chromium can also interfere with levothyroxine (Synthroid and others), a thyroid hormone replacement — research shows it may reduce how much of the drug your body absorbs by around 17 percent, which could weaken the effect of your thyroid medication.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as aspirin, appear to increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains. While these are rated Minor interactions, they're worth keeping in mind if you take these pain relievers regularly.
Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page to see if any apply to you.

For each ingredient in GTF Chromium 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
GTF Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
