Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
BioAstin contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a natural carotenoid (a type of pigment) derived from Hawaiian microalgae. The softgel also holds high oleic safflower oil, gelatin, glycerine, purified water, and vitamin E as inactive ingredients to deliver and preserve the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin's effectiveness isn't established in our data. Claims about age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome all carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence.
That doesn't mean the ingredient doesn't work—it means the research to date hasn't been robust enough to draw firm conclusions. If you're considering BioAstin for one of these purposes, ask your doctor what the current evidence supports for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects in trials were abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
A small number of participants at higher doses (40 mg daily) reported severe stomach or abdominal pain. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best to avoid BioAstin during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking BioAstin, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take medications that are broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. This includes heart medications, cholesterol drugs, immunosuppressants, and others.
Astaxanthin may lower their blood levels and reduce their effectiveness—a moderate-severity concern backed by lab research (not yet confirmed in people).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
BioAstin is a single-ingredient supplement of natural astaxanthin, generally well tolerated but with limited long-term safety research. The main caution is its potential to speed up how your liver breaks down many medications—check your prescription drugs against the interaction tool before starting.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering astaxanthin for a specific health condition, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Hawaiian Astaxanthin by BioAstin Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin contains astaxanthin, a natural ingredient that may interact with medications broken down by two liver enzymes: CYP3A4 and CYP2B6.
The concern is moderate: astaxanthin appears to speed up how your liver processes these drugs, which could lower their levels in your blood. These findings come from lab studies on human liver cells, not yet confirmed in people taking the supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications.
If you take any prescription drug—especially heart medications, cholesterol drugs, immunosuppressants, or any other medications processed through these liver pathways—run them through the interaction checker on this page before starting BioAstin. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether the timing or dose of your medications needs to shift.
