What’s inside
Low disclosure
HLC Child Natural Blackcurrant Flavor contains six active ingredients—all probiotics (beneficial bacteria). Three are Lactobacillus acidophilus strains (CUL-21 and CUL-60, listed separately), plus Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Lactobacillus salivarius.
These are live microorganisms meant to support digestive health. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients including xylitol, sorbitol, natural blackcurrant flavor, silica, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus strains are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is possibly effective for respiratory tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, and constipation. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections.
However, evidence for other conditions—like Alzheimer disease, anxiety, or acute respiratory distress—is either insufficient or the organisms are possibly ineffective (as with atopic disease for the Lactobacillus strains). For two of the ingredients we could not check effectiveness data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy children. The most common side effect is diarrhea; less common gastrointestinal complaints include bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and stomach discomfort.
These side effects are usually mild and uncommon. A rare but serious concern: since these are live organisms, there's a theoretical risk of infection in people with weakened immune systems, though cases are very rare.
Talk with your child's doctor before starting this product, especially if they have any immune system concerns.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Space out antibiotic drugs (Moderate interaction): antibiotics can kill the live organisms in this probiotic and reduce how well it works. If your child is on antibiotics, give them at different times of day—ask their pharmacist about the right timing.
We could not check two of the six active ingredients for medication interactions, so review all of your child's medications with a pharmacist before starting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
HLC Child Natural Blackcurrant Flavor is a multi-strain probiotic intended to support digestive and respiratory health in children. It's generally well tolerated, but the biggest thing to watch is spacing it away from antibiotic doses—antibiotics can kill the beneficial bacteria and make the probiotic less effective.
If your child is on any medications or has a weakened immune system, check with their doctor or pharmacist before starting.
