Hoodia Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Hoodia against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted hoodia (Hoodia gordonii) as a dried plant liquid extract. Hoodia is a plant used traditionally as an appetite suppressant, though the scientific evidence for its effectiveness in weight management remains limited.
The liquid also contains menstruum as an inactive ingredient (the solvent used to extract the plant material).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on hoodia for obesity is insufficient — we don't have reliable data showing it works for that purpose. While it has a long history in traditional use, clinical research hasn't yet established whether it's genuinely effective for weight loss in the way marketing often suggests.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hoodia has limited safety data, and side effects have been reported. The most common ones are minor and include skin sensation changes, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea.
There's also concern that hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using hoodia if you take blood pressure medications (Moderate interaction), heart rate medications like beta-blockers (Moderate), diabetes medications (Moderate), or insulin (Moderate). Hoodia may reduce how well blood pressure and heart drugs work, and it may enhance blood sugar-lowering effects, raising the risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hoodia is a traditional appetite suppressant with insufficient evidence of effectiveness for weight loss. If you take blood pressure medication, heart medication, diabetes medication, or insulin, you'll want to discuss this product with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interactions are real and could affect how your medications work.
Given the limited safety data and reported side effects, it's worth having that conversation regardless.

Hoodia by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Hoodia can interact with several medication types, and we need to flag the most serious ones upfront.
Through its hoodia content, this product may reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) and heart rate drugs (beta-blockers), and it may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of diabetes medications and insulin — potentially causing low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). All four of these interaction categories carry Moderate severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take any blood pressure or heart medication, hoodia may work against them by raising your blood pressure and heart rate, potentially making those drugs less effective. If you're on diabetes medication or insulin, hoodia might lower your blood sugar more than intended, so blood glucose monitoring becomes especially important if you're considering this product.
Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications.
Before you start hoodia, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist — particularly if you're managing blood pressure, heart rate, or blood sugar.

wildcrafted Hoodia (Hoodia gordonii) dried plant liquid extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
