Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Inositol shows possibly effective evidence for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic syndrome. For preterm labor, the evidence also rates as possibly effective.
However, for anxiety, diabetic nerve pain (diabetic neuropathy), and depression, the evidence rates as possibly ineffective — meaning it's not shown to help with those conditions in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Inositol is generally well tolerated at common doses. The most frequent side effects are mild digestive ones — diarrhea, gas, and nausea — when taken by mouth.
One clinical report noted cold and allergy symptoms in children who took inositol combined with omega-3 fatty acids, though that was a different formulation. There's one case report of a man hospitalized with mania after consuming an energy drink with inositol and multiple other ingredients over several days, but it's unclear whether inositol alone was responsible.
For pregnancy, the safety data advises that there isn't enough information to know if it's safe, so use only under your doctor's supervision. Lactation safety data isn't on file for this ingredient.
