Iodine at normal dietary levels is well tolerated. High doses, however, can cause thyroid problems — including swelling (goiter), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

Common side effects at higher intakes include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal upset, headache, metallic taste, and stuffy nose. Rarely, some people have hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, swelling, or in severe cases anaphylaxis.

Chronic use of very large amounts has been linked to acne-like skin lesions (iododerma). For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the facts show mixed ratings: adequate iodine is important during pregnancy and lactation, but only in the amount your doctor advises — avoid high-dose products.

Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
