What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 6 active ingredients.
  • “Probiotic Blend Complex” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (250 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

Kidophilus Plus contains 6 active ingredients, all probiotics—beneficial bacteria meant to support gut health. The named strains are Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, plus a Probiotic Blend Complex that houses additional organisms.

Maltodextrin is included as a carrier. The tablet also has inactive ingredients (xylitol, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, citric acid, natural flavors, and silicon dioxide) that serve as binders, thickeners, and flow aids.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: advanced probiotics for children's digestive health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Colic, Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Lactose intolerance — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Bifidobacterium Bifidum is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus together cover several uses. Both are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For other conditions in the product's range—hay fever, Alzheimer disease, anxiety, respiratory infections, and acute respiratory distress syndrome—the evidence either hasn't been established or is too limited to say whether it works.

We hold no effectiveness data for the other probiotic strains in this formula.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 2 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people and children. People with weakened immune systems should be cautious, and anyone considering this product should check with their doctor first, since the evidence is limited.

Bloating and flatulence can occur with probiotics generally, though these specific effects haven't been reported from B. bifidum alone. One isolated case of vomiting and fever was reported in a child taking both B. bifidum and L. acidophilus together, but it's unclear whether the probiotics caused it.

Rare cases of serious bacterial infection (sepsis) have been documented with probiotics, but none from B. bifidum specifically. Gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and burping are uncommon when L. acidophilus is combined with other probiotics.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 2 of the 2 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Bifidum.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

The main medication type to double-check is antibiotic drugs. Because this product contains live probiotic organisms, antibiotics taken at the same time may reduce how well the probiotics work.

Your doctor or pharmacist can help you time them correctly. Use the interaction checker on this page to confirm your specific antibiotics before you start.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Kidophilus Plus is a multi-strain probiotic aimed at supporting digestive health and possibly helping with IBS and certain infections. If you take antibiotics, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about timing—you'll want to space out when you take this product and your antibiotic so the antibiotics don't kill off the beneficial bacteria.

Anyone with a weakened immune system or anyone new to probiotics should check with their healthcare provider before starting.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Kidophilus Plus Berry Flavored by Advanced Nutrition by Zahler: Common Questions

Does Kidophilus Plus Berry Flavored by Advanced Nutrition by Zahler interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Kidophilus Plus Berry Flavored has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Kidophilus Plus Berry Flavored contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Kidophilus Plus if I'm on an antibiotic?
You can, but timing matters. Antibiotics kill bacteria, including the good ones in this probiotic. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about spacing out when you take them—usually several hours apart helps preserve the probiotic's benefit.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are both rated Possibly Safe in pregnancy. We don't have safety data on file for the other strains. That said, pregnancy is a good time to run any supplement by your doctor or midwife first to make sure it fits your individual situation.

Bloating, gas, and mild stomach discomfort are the most common. One rare case of vomiting and fever in a child was reported, but it's unclear if the probiotics caused it. If you notice unusual symptoms, stop and talk to your doctor.
Does this really help with IBS?
Both Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are possibly effective for IBS based on the evidence we hold. That means some people see benefit, but the research isn't definitive yet. Your own results may vary, and it's worth discussing with your doctor.
Is this safe for kids?
The product name suggests it's formulated for children, and Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy kids. That said, children with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Your pediatrician can advise whether it's right for your child.
Does it have any fillers?
Yes—like most tablets, it contains inactive ingredients including xylitol, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and others that help hold the tablet together and add flavor. The active ingredients are the live probiotic bacteria.
