Kyo-Dophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Kyo-Dophilus
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Kyo-Dophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Kyo-Dophilus by Kyo-Dophilus
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Kyo-Dophilus has 3 active ingredients: three species of beneficial bacteria. Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium longum are two types of bifidobacteria that live in your gut.
Lactobacillus gasseri is a lactobacillus species — another common probiotic strain. These are live microorganisms meant to support your digestive and immune health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: gelatin, potato starch, and silica act as fillers and binders to hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on what these strains actually do is mixed. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and respiratory tract infections, but the data on respiratory infections isn't strong.
For the other conditions listed — hay fever, Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety — we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus gasseri have insufficient reliable evidence for the conditions in our data — that includes age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, anxiety, asthma, athletic performance, gastric damage, bacterial vaginosis, the common cold, and diarrhea.
If you're thinking about this product for a specific condition, ask your pharmacist whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
All three bacteria are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though the safety data are limited overall. Those with weakened immune systems should be cautious, and anyone who is seriously ill or immune-compromised should check with their doctor first.
The most commonly reported side effects are bloating and flatulence — though these haven't been specifically documented with Bifidobacterium bifidum alone. Rare cases of abdominal discomfort, constipation, and other digestive upset have been reported with Bifidobacterium longum, and one case of a dry cough.
Very rarely, these bacteria have caused serious bloodstream infections (bacteremia or sepsis) in critically ill patients, especially premature infants with IV lines or recent surgery, but these cases are uncommon and not all have involved the exact strains in this product. For Bifidobacterium longum, pregnancy and lactation are rated possibly safe.
We don't have pregnancy or lactation data on file for Bifidobacterium bifidum or Lactobacillus gasseri, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're taking any antibiotic drugs, separate the timing from this probiotic. Antibiotics can reduce how well the live bacteria in Kyo-Dophilus work by killing them off.
Ask your pharmacist how many hours apart to take them — usually finishing the antibiotic first, then waiting a day or two before starting the probiotic, makes the most sense.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a standard three-strain probiotic. If you have IBS or recurrent respiratory infections, the data support giving Bifidobacterium bifidum a try.
The main thing to watch for is antibiotic use — separate the timing so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria. If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or pregnant, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Kyo-Dophilus by Kyo-Dophilus Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kyo-Dophilus contains three live probiotic bacteria, and all three interact with antibiotic drugs.
The interaction is Moderate severity across the board: because these products contain live organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics can kill a significant number of the beneficial bacteria, reducing the effectiveness of the probiotic itself. The three ingredients affected are Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus gasseri.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you're taking an antibiotic, separate the timing — don't take them together. Ask your pharmacist for specific guidance on how many hours apart to space them; it usually makes sense to finish your antibiotic course first, then start the probiotic a day or two later.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications. That large number reflects the wide range of antibiotic drugs available, not a sign that this product is especially risky — it's just that antibiotics are numerous and all can affect live probiotics the same way.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your specific drugs are listed.

Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
