Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Carnosine (shown here as Right Age Carnosine), a dipeptide — a small protein made of two amino acids linked together. Your body naturally produces carnosine in muscle and brain tissue.
The inactive ingredients are gelatin (the capsule) and calcium laurate (a binder).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for carnosine is limited and mixed. For autism spectrum disorder, the data suggest it's possibly ineffective.
For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, cataracts, and general cognitive impairment, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works. If you're considering this for one of those reasons, talk it over with your doctor about what the research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Carnosine is generally well tolerated in short studies, but we don't have solid long-term safety data yet. Some trial participants reported decreased appetite, dry mouth, small weight changes, foot and joint pain, and in one case, pneumonia — though the link to the supplement wasn't always clear.
The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs — whether insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or others — check your specific medications with the tool on this page. Carnosine may increase the risk of low blood sugar, so your doctor may need to monitor or adjust your dose.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Carnosine is a single-ingredient supplement with limited evidence for most uses and a potential to lower blood sugar if you're on antidiabetes medication. If that's you, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Long-term safety isn't well established, and it's not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it makes sense for you.
