Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Glutamine at 500 mg per tablet. L-Glutamine is an amino acid — one of the building blocks your body uses to make protein.
The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, croscarmellose sodium, silicon dioxide, and less than 2% of other ingredients that help hold the tablet together and keep it stable.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
The evidence for these other uses is suggestive but not yet conclusive. If you're thinking about using it for one of these reasons, talk it over with your doctor to see if it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects reported when taken by mouth are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting — mostly mild digestive issues.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A few rare cases of dizziness, mania, or hypomania have been noted, mostly in people with bipolar disorder.
If you have kidney or liver disease, you should only take this supplement under your doctor's supervision. The safety data in pregnancy is rated likely safe, but there isn't enough reliable information about use while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it then.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any anticonvulsant medication (a drug to prevent seizures), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting L-Glutamine. Theoretically, it may work against how these drugs work, though this hasn't been proven in humans yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine works for sickle cell disease and shows promise for certain types of wasting and recovery from surgery or critical illness. If you're on an anticonvulsant medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Most people handle it well, but digestive upset and headache can happen. Make the call with your own healthcare provider about whether it's right for you.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine 500 mg by Spring Valley has one documented interaction: with anticonvulsant medications (drugs used to prevent seizures).
The concern is theoretical rather than proven in humans — glutamine is broken down in your body to glutamate, a brain chemical that might work against seizure medications — but this hasn't actually been reported in people yet. Still, if you take any anticonvulsant, it's worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement.
