What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine 500 mg per capsule. L-glutamine is an amino acid your body uses for immune function, gut health, and muscle recovery.
The capsule also includes vegetable cellulose, rice concentrate, magnesium stearate, and silica as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-glutamine is rated effective for sickle cell disease. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma.
The evidence for those three conditions is promising but not yet as strong as for sickle cell disease.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in healthy adults. The most common side effects in studies and reports are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. If you have kidney or liver disease, you should only use this supplement under medical supervision.
The safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether supplemental doses make sense for you in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure preventers), check your specific drugs with the tool on this page before starting L-glutamine. Glutamine might theoretically reduce how well they work, though this hasn't been seen in patients yet — your own doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh that risk against any benefit you'd expect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery after surgery or critical illness. If you take anticonvulsant medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.
It's generally well tolerated, but stick with your healthcare provider if you have kidney or liver disease or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
