by Bluebonnet
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine Powder against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses. In this powder form, you're getting pure L-glutamine with no fillers or other inactive ingredients added.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-Glutamine has an Effective rating for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, it's rated Possibly Effective — meaning there's some evidence it may help, but more research is needed to be sure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral use are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. High doses (10–30 grams daily) used in clinical trials increased the chance of GI upset.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under your doctor's supervision. The safety data in pregnancy and lactation shows it's likely safe, but because there isn't enough reliable information overall, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your anticonvulsant (seizure) medications before you start — glutamine theoretically might interfere with how they work, though this hasn't been seen in patients yet. Run all your prescriptions through our medication checker on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness — and possibly for HIV/AIDS-related wasting. If you take seizure medications, check with us first.
Anyone with kidney or liver disease should get their doctor's okay before starting.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine Powder by Bluebonnet has one documented interaction we need to talk about.
The main concern is with anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs). Glutamine gets broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that theoretically might work against how anticonvulsants work.
We haven't seen this happen in real patients yet, but it's something to flag.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, no interactions are documented with other medication types in our data. That said, the interaction data we hold may not be complete — new interactions can emerge.
Before you start this supplement, run it through the medication checker on this page with your exact prescriptions, especially if you take seizure medications.

L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
