by Carlson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine Powder against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses for gut health, immune function, and muscle metabolism. There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-glutamine is rated Effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is Possibly Effective — meaning there's some promising data, but we'd need more research to be certain it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral doses are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and GI pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. Dizziness and a single case of mania or hypomania in people with bipolar disorder have been noted in the literature, though these are rare.
If you have kidney or liver disease, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it — you'll need supervision. There isn't enough safety data in pregnancy, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Similarly, there isn't enough data on breastfeeding, so discuss it with your clinician before using it while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), double-check with your pharmacist before using this product — glutamine might theoretically interfere with how they work. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact drug.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with muscle wasting, recovery after surgery, or critical illness — but check with your pharmacist first if you take seizure medication. If you have kidney or liver problems, pregnancy plans, or you're breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
