What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-glutamine, a amino acid your body naturally makes and uses for gut health, immune function, and recovery from stress or injury. It comes as a powder with no other ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence backing glutamine depends on what you're using it for. It's rated effective for sickle cell disease.
For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is possibly effective — meaning there's some support, but more research would help confirm the benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are mild: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, cough, and musculoskeletal pain.
Dizziness and headache have been reported, though one person's dizziness went away when the dose was lowered. Two people with bipolar disorder reported mania or hypomania while taking glutamine.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under medical supervision. There's not enough safety data to recommend it during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it — talk with them first.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs) with your doctor or pharmacist — there's a theoretical Moderate risk that glutamine might reduce their effectiveness, though this hasn't yet been reported in people.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery from surgery or critical illness. If you take anticonvulsant (seizure) medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
People with kidney or liver disease should only use it under their doctor's care. Have a conversation with your own healthcare provider about whether this product fits your situation.
