Kion Lean has 3 active ingredients: bitter melon fruit extract (wild-harvested), astragalus root extract, and Panax notoginseng root extract. Bitter melon is traditionally used for blood sugar support; astragalus is an adaptogenic herb meant to support immune function; and Panax notoginseng (also called notoginseng ginseng) has been studied for cardiovascular effects.
The product also contains inactive ingredients—hypromellose (a capsule material), Nu-Flow, tapioca maltodextrin, and silica—which serve as binders and flow agents.

Not established
The evidence for what Kion Lean can do is limited. Bitter melon, astragalus, and Panax notoginseng all have effectiveness ratings showing insufficient reliable evidence for most of their traditional uses.
Panax notoginseng is rated possibly effective for angina and stroke, but the data we hold don't support claims for weight management or the other marketed purposes of this supplement. How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bitter melon is generally well tolerated at food doses, but supplement amounts may lower blood sugar and cause stomach upset. The most common side effects reported in clinical studies were gastrointestinal—heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort—in about 3% to 16% of people taking it.
Rare cases of kidney damage (acute interstitial nephritis) have been reported with prolonged high-dose use. Astragalus has limited human safety data but is generally tolerated short-term; dizziness and rash have been reported rarely.
Panax notoginseng may cause dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, rash, nervousness, and insomnia, and it is considered likely unsafe in pregnancy due to traditional concerns about effects on bleeding. Neither bitter melon nor astragalus has adequate safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so they're best avoided if you're pregnant or nursing.

Bitter melon may increase blood sugar-lowering effects when combined with antidiabetes drugs, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and it might also increase levels of certain cancer medications (P-glycoprotein substrates) or the drug pazopanib. Astragalus may interfere with immunosuppressant medications and lithium levels, and it may add to the blood-sugar-lowering effects of antidiabetes drugs.
Panax notoginseng may reduce the effects of caffeine and certain medications processed through CYP1A2 enzymes, increase aspirin levels, and raise the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.

Bitter Melon Fruit Extract, Wild
Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking bitter melon with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Bitter melon can lower blood glucose levels and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
Theoretically, bitter melon might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
Bitter melon might inhibit the p-glycoprotein (P-gp) intestinal pump and increase intracellular levels of P-gp substrates. In vitro research in intestinal cells shows that 1-monopalmitin, a constituent of bitter melon, increases levels of daunomycin, a P-gp substrate. Additionally, drinking bitter melon juice has been associated with a case of acute pancreatitis in a patient who had been taking pazopanib, a P-gp substrate, for 8 years. Researchers theorize that inhibition of P-gp led to increased levels of pazopanib, resulting in pazopanib-induced pancreatitis.
Pazopanib (Votrient)
Theoretically, bitter melon might increase levels of pazopanib, potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects.
In one case, a 65-year-old patient taking pazopanib for 8 years for renal cell carcinoma experienced signs and symptoms consistent with acute pancreatitis 4 days after drinking bitter melon juice at a dose of 100-150 mL daily. The patient's symptoms, amylase levels, and lipase levels improved upon discontinuation of bitter melon and pazopanib. Pazopanib treatment was re-initiated with no further evidence of pancreatitis. Researchers theorize that inhibition of P-glycoprotein by bitter melon led to increased levels of pazopanib, a P-glycoprotein substrate, resulting in pazopanib-induced pancreatitis.
Astragalus membranaceus Root Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking astragalus with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research in humans shows that astragalus might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking astragalus, especially in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Panax notoginseng Root Extract
Aspirin
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with aspirin may increase the risk of adverse effects from both products.
Animal research shows that taking Panax notoginseng extract with aspirin increases blood levels of salicylic acid by approximately 50% and blood levels of Panax notoginseng by 75% to 196%. This effect may be due to increased absorption of both products.
Caffeine
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng may decrease the levels and clinical effects of caffeine.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction is attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding.
Animal research shows that taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with warfarin increases plasma warfarin levels, prothrombin time, and international normalized ratio when compared with control. In vitro research also suggests that Panax notoginseng may downregulate expression of cytochrome P450 3A4 enzymes, which may affect warfarin metabolism.
