What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a leafy herb traditionally used to ease stress and support mood. It's supplied as a 475 mg capsule.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose (a plant fiber), magnesium stearate (a flow agent), and rice extract blend—which help bind and deliver the herb but are not therapeutic.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is possibly effective for herpes labialis (cold sores) and possibly effective for stress and depression, according to the evidence we hold. That means some clinical studies support its use for these purposes, but the evidence isn't definitive enough to call it proven.
If you're considering it for another condition, the data we have doesn't address that.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been thoroughly studied. A small number of trial participants reported dizziness or sedation, but these occurred no more often than with placebo.
One case reported heart rhythm changes (transient complete atrioventricular block and QT prolongation) in a 25-year-old using a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible; symptoms resolved within 24 hours of stopping the product. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
While breastfeeding, safety information is limited—talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use. Topically, a 1% cream applied to cold sores caused irritation or worsening in a few cases, but not more often than placebo.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this, check with your pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, narcotic painkillers, or any drug that makes you drowsy) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Both interactions are Moderate in severity and could affect how well your medications work or how you feel.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon balm may help with cold sores, stress, or low mood, though the evidence is still developing. If you take sedatives, sleep aids, pain relievers that cause drowsiness, or thyroid hormone replacement, check with your pharmacist first—lemon balm could potentiate the former and interfere with the latter.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should talk to their doctor before use.

Discussion: Indigenous to the mountain regions of southern Europe, lemon balm is now a common plant found in gardens everywhere. There is an old myth that this fragrant herb attracts honey bees more than other plants, giving it the nickname of "bee balm." The flavorful leaves enjoy culinary appreciation, especially in the form of a refreshing tea. In Medieval times, drinks with lemon balm were thought to comfort the heart and lift the spirits.

Lemon Balm 475 mg by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solaray's Lemon Balm 475 mg contains one active ingredient—lemon balm itself—and it does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers): lemon balm may add to their effect, potentially making you drowsy or impairing alertness more than the drug alone would. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Another Moderate concern is thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Lemon balm constituents can bind to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptors in lab studies and have lowered thyroid hormone levels in animal research, which could theoretically reduce how well your thyroid medication works.
Although lemon balm does have documented interactions with these medication types, a small number of trial participants reported dizziness or sedation, but these did not occur more often than with placebo; using lemon balm with alcohol did not affect reaction time or thinking in research. Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications.

Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
