Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Chloral Hydrate
Chloral Hydrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lemon Balm interacts with.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: chloral hydrate is a sedative that calms your brain and helps you fall asleep. Lemon balm, the gentle calming herb, appears to have a mild sedative effect of its own. When you put the two together, those calming effects can stack up. That could mean feeling more drowsy, groggy, or lightheaded than expected, along with slower breathing or trouble waking up fully.
This is mostly a theoretical concern based on smaller studies, so it's not a guaranteed problem. Still, because chloral hydrate is already a strong sleep medicine, I'd play it safe. An occasional cup of lemon balm tea is gentler than concentrated supplement capsules, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Lemon balm is a gentle, lemon-scented mint-family herb traditionally used to ease stress, support sleep, and calm digestion, and topically for cold sores.
