HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lemon Balm Extract by Earthborn Elements
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lemon balm extract. Lemon balm is a culinary and medicinal herb from the mint family, used in traditional medicine to support relaxation and mood.
The capsule itself is made with gelatin as an inactive binder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm extract is rated possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) when used topically or orally, and possibly effective for stress and depression. That means the evidence suggests a benefit, but it's not yet definitive — more research would strengthen the case.
If you're considering it for one of these uses, talk with your pharmacist about what the current evidence shows and whether it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in most healthy adults. Dizziness and sedation have been reported, but they don't occur more often than with placebo, and mixing it with alcohol doesn't harm reaction time or thinking.
Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been well studied, so we don't have strong data on that. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so you should avoid it unless your doctor says otherwise.
While breastfeeding, safety information is limited — talk to your doctor before using it. There's one reported case of heart rhythm changes in a young woman taking a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but the product had several other ingredients so it's unclear which one was responsible.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against lemon balm if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, opioid pain relievers, sleeping medications) — Moderate risk of added drowsiness. Also check if you take thyroid hormone replacement therapy — Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness.
Use the search tool below to verify your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon balm extract may help with cold sores, stress, or low mood — the evidence suggests a benefit. If you take a CNS depressant (sleeping pills, anxiety meds, opioids) or thyroid replacement, you'll want to check with your pharmacist first.

Lemon Balm Extract by Earthborn Elements Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lemon Balm Extract by Earthborn Elements has documented interactions with two main drug categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medications, pain relievers like opioids) — lemon balm itself has sedating activity in the brain, so taking it together could add up and make you drowsier or more sedated than either one alone. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The other Moderate concern is thyroid hormone replacement. Lemon balm can bind to thyroid signaling molecules in the lab and lower thyroid hormone levels in animals, which might interfere with your medication's effectiveness if you're being treated for an underactive thyroid.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications.
If you take any CNS depressant or thyroid replacement therapy, run your exact medications through the checker below before you start.

Lemon Balm extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
