Here's the simple version: eszopiclone (Lunesta) already works by quieting down your brain so you can fall asleep. Lemon balm seems to have a mild calming, sleepy effect of its own. Put the two together and those effects can stack up, so you may feel more drowsy than expected, groggy or foggy the next morning, dizzy, or a little unsteady on your feet if you get up at night.

This is mostly a theoretical concern based on small studies and animal research, so it isn't a sure thing, and a cup of lemon balm tea is gentler than concentrated capsules. Still, since both target sleep, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially while you see how the pair affects you.

What Is Eszopiclone Used For?

Brand name: Lunesta

Eszopiclone tablets — sold under the brand name Lunesta and as generics — are indicated for the treatment of insomnia. In clinical studies, eszopiclone helped people fall asleep more quickly (reduced sleep latency) and stay asleep through the night (improved sleep maintenance).

Clinical trials supporting its effectiveness lasted up to 6 months in adults and up to 2 weeks in elderly patients. Lunesta and eszopiclone generics are approved for this same indication across the available tablet formulations.
