Lung Cleanse contains 12 ingredients in a proprietary blend, which means you're getting a mix of several herbs and essential oils without set amounts listed for each. The named active ingredients include peppermint (both whole herb and essential oil), organic eucalyptus, organic lungwort, organic plantain, organic elecampane, organic lobelia, organic chaparral, lovage, organic lemon balm, menthol, organic orange, and the proprietary blend itself.
The product also contains vegetable glycerin and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
For peppermint and peppermint essential oil, the data shows they're likely effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and possibly effective for indigestion (dyspepsia), nausea from chemotherapy, and reducing muscle spasm during procedures. For the other ingredients — eucalyptus, elecampane, lovage, lobelia, lemon balm, chaparral, lungwort, and menthol — the evidence in our data either isn't established or is rated insufficient.
Lobelia is actually rated possibly ineffective for smoking cessation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Peppermint oil and peppermint leaf are generally well tolerated, but concentrated oil can cause abdominal pain, anal burning, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting; in rare cases, allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or severe mouth and throat burns have been reported. Eucalyptus is generally safe in small diluted amounts or when inhaled, but undiluted oral use can be toxic — even 1 mL can cause serious central nervous system depression, seizures, coma, or death.
Chaparral is considered unsafe; it carries a significant risk of liver and kidney damage, and multiple cases of severe liver toxicity requiring transplant have been reported. Elecampane can cause allergic skin reactions and stomach upset.
Lobelia can be toxic at higher doses, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, tremors, and at doses of 600 mg or above, toxicity with sweating, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, and possible death. Lovage may increase sun sensitivity with long-term use.
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated but high-dose and long-term safety aren't well studied.

The most serious concern is chaparral, which has Moderate-severity interactions with drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) — chaparral itself can cause liver damage, and combining it with other liver-toxic medications could worsen that risk.

Peppermint (listed twice in this product) and peppermint essential oil interact with several drug-processing enzymes in your liver. Both can theoretically increase levels of drugs processed by CYP3A4, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19 substrates — a Moderate concern — and may also affect CYP1A2 substrates (Minor).
Peppermint also specifically interacts with cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant. Eucalyptus similarly affects the same enzyme systems (CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP1A2) at Moderate severity, plus it may lower blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used with diabetes medications and could theoretically reduce how well amphetamines and the sedative pentobarbital work.
Elecampane may add to the drowsy effects of central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids). Lovage may interfere with water pills (diuretics).
Lobelia can affect lithium levels. Lemon balm may also add to CNS depressant effects and could interfere with thyroid hormone replacement.

Amphetamines
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the effectiveness of amphetamines.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol may reduce the levels of amphetamines in the blood.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, eucalyptus leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that eucalyptus leaf might have hypoglycemic activity, and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP1A2, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C19, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP2C9, although this has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, inhaling eucalyptol might reduce the effectiveness of pentobarbital.
Animal research suggests that inhaling eucalyptol reduces the level of pentobarbital that reaches the brain.
Peppermint
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Theoretically, peppermint oil might increase the levels and adverse effects of cyclosporine.
In animal research, peppermint oil inhibits cyclosporine metabolism and increases cyclosporine levels. Inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) may be partially responsible for this interaction. An interaction between peppermint oil and cyclosporine has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that a single dose of peppermint oil 600 mg inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and increases the AUC of felodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate. However, in vitro research suggests that peppermint oil only inhibits CYP3A4 at very high concentrations.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that peppermint oil and peppermint leaf inhibit CYP1A2. However, in clinical research, peppermint tea did not significantly affect the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate. It is possible that the 6-day duration of treatment may have been too short to identify a difference.

Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, chaparral might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
organic Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
organic Elecampane
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, elecampane may cause additive sedative effects when taken with CNS depressants.
Elecampane might have sedative effects.
Lovage
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, lovage root might interfere with diuretic therapy due to its aquaretic effects.
Some diuretics include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.
organic Lobelia
Lithium
Lobelia is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, lobelia might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
