Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: zeaxanthin, a carotenoid your body uses for eye and brain health. The softgel itself is made from gelatin, safflower oil, vegetable glycerin, yellow beeswax, and DL-alpha-tocopherol (a form of vitamin E), all of which are inactive excipients that help deliver the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the progressive eye condition that can develop as you age. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, breast cancer, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the evidence we have isn't reliable enough yet to say whether zeaxanthin helps — that's listed as insufficient reliable evidence.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Zeaxanthin is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. In pregnancy, dietary amounts from food are fine, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a concentrated supplement while pregnant.
The same caution applies to breastfeeding: food sources are safe, but there isn't enough data on concentrated supplements while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antidiabetes drugs — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase your risk of low blood sugar. Check your exact blood-sugar medications with the interaction tool on this page before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
If you're interested in supporting eye health and have AMD, this may be worth discussing with your eye doctor. If you take any blood-sugar medication, check your specific drugs on this page before you start.
Pregnant or nursing? Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first — the safety data for concentrated supplements in those situations isn't there yet.

Lutein 20 mg by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Lutein 20 mg contains zeaxanthin, which has a documented interaction with antidiabetes drugs.
If you take medications to manage blood sugar, zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The concern comes from animal research showing zeaxanthin can lower blood sugar; however, population studies of people eating dietary lutein and zeaxanthin haven't found a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
