HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Magnolia Bark by Genesis Today
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: magnolia bark extract from Magnolia officinalis. Magnolia bark has been studied for its effects on gum health and contains two main active compounds, honokiol and magnolol, which lab research suggests may have sedative and blood-clotting effects.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable material.
Does it work?
Not established
Magnolia bark is possibly effective for gingivitis (gum inflammation). For allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and dental plaque, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold — there isn't enough reliable research to say whether it helps.
For anxiety, the same applies: we don't have sufficient evidence to rate its effectiveness.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken by mouth, magnolia bark is generally well tolerated in short-term use, though human safety data is limited. The most common side effect with topical use is contact dermatitis (skin irritation).
In clinical trials of combination products containing magnolia, a small number of people reported sexual dysfunction, shaking hands, perilabial numbness, fatigue, and headache — though it's unclear whether magnolia or another ingredient caused these. Magnolia is not recommended during pregnancy because of potential effects on the uterus and insufficient safety data.
There isn't enough reliable information about safety during breastfeeding, so it's best avoided.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications before taking magnolia bark if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin or aspirin) — magnolia may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you take CNS depressants like sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, or opioids, since magnolia might add to their drowsiness effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Magnolia bark is possibly effective for gingivitis and is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term. If you take blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or medications that cause drowsiness, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.
Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it.

Magnolia Bark by Genesis Today Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Genesis Today's Magnolia Bark contains magnolia bark extract, which interacts with two important drug categories.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel) — magnolia's active compounds may slow down blood clotting and increase bleeding risk when combined with these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Magnolia bark also has documented interactions with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and opioids). In lab and animal studies, magnolia's main active compounds show sedative effects, so taking it alongside these drugs might add up to excessive drowsiness or impaired thinking.
Altogether, these interactions span 351 individual medications. If you take any blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or sedating medications, run your specific drug list through the interaction checker below before starting magnolia bark.

Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) bark extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
