Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium (as chromium picolinate), at 800 micrograms per tablet. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and insulin action.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, vegetable cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silica — which are binders and fillers that help form and stabilize the tablet.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which can occur when your diet is very low in the mineral. For type 2 diabetes, the evidence rates as possibly effective — some research shows chromium may help lower blood glucose, especially in people whose diabetes is not well controlled.
For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence we hold rates as possibly ineffective, meaning a clear benefit hasn't been established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects — kidney and liver damage, rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown), and low platelet counts — have been reported, as have skin rashes and allergic reactions in some people, especially those with a contact allergy to chromium. Long-term or high-dose use may carry higher risk.
The safety data notes that small amounts from food or a prenatal vitamin are considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor recommends it. There isn't enough safety information on higher supplement doses in pregnancy and nursing, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your pharmacist if you take insulin or any diabetes medication — chromium may lower your blood sugar further. Levothyroxine (Synthroid) users should also double-check, since chromium can reduce its absorption.
If you take NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen regularly, or use aspirin, let your pharmacist know as well.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Mega Chromium is worth considering if you have a chromium deficiency or want to explore support for type 2 diabetes control under professional guidance. If you take insulin, antidiabetic pills, or levothyroxine, you need to check with your pharmacist first — timing and dosing matter.
Anyone on regular pain relievers or with a history of blood disorders should mention this supplement to their pharmacist.

Mega Chromium Picolinate 800 mcg by Vitamin World Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mega Chromium Picolinate 800 mcg by Vitamin World does interact with several medication types, most notably blood sugar–lowering drugs.
Chromium may add to the effects of insulin and other antidiabetic medications (drugs that lower blood sugar), raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take insulin or diabetes pills, this is something to discuss with your pharmacist before starting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium may also interfere with levothyroxine (Synthroid), a thyroid hormone replacement: research shows it can reduce how much of the drug your body absorbs by about 17%. If you take levothyroxine, you'd want to separate the timing of these two — your pharmacist can advise on the right spacing.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as aspirin, may increase how much chromium your body takes in and retains. These interactions are rated Minor, but worth noting if you take these pain relievers or blood thinners regularly.
Alone, these interactions span 177 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Mega Chromium Picolinate 800 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
