Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lemon balm leaf at 1,500 mg per capsule. Lemon balm is a leafy herb traditionally used to support calm and emotional balance.
The capsule itself contains hypromellose, a common inactive ingredient that helps hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we have suggests lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis), stress, and mood support (depression). That means some clinical trials point to a benefit, but the research isn't yet robust enough to call it proven.
If you're considering lemon balm for any of these uses, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether the current evidence fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety and high-dose safety haven't been thoroughly studied. Common side effects like dizziness or sedation don't appear to happen more often with lemon balm than with placebo in trials.
One rare case of heart rhythm abnormality was reported in a product containing lemon balm plus other ingredients, but it's unclear lemon balm alone caused it. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy unless your doctor says otherwise.
If you're breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information — talk with your doctor before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check whether you take any CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or pain drugs that cause drowsiness) or thyroid hormone replacement — these are the two medication categories with documented Moderate interactions with lemon balm.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon balm is a reasonable choice if you're exploring herbal support for stress or cold sores and don't take sedating drugs or thyroid medication. If you do take either, check with your pharmacist first.
It's generally well tolerated short-term, but long-term safety isn't well established, and pregnancy use should be cleared with your doctor.

Melissa Lemon Balm Leaf 1,500 mg by Nature's Way Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Melissa Lemon Balm Leaf by Nature's Way has documented interactions with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain medications) — lemon balm may add to their drowsy or calming effects, which could intensify sedation or impair alertness. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lemon balm may also interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy (Moderate severity). In lab studies, lemon balm compounds bind to thyroid-stimulating hormone receptors in a way that could block the signal your body uses to regulate thyroid function.
If you take thyroid medication, this could reduce its effectiveness.
Although lemon balm is generally well tolerated, do check your exact medications with the tool on this page before you start — especially if you take any sedating drugs or thyroid hormones. Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications.

Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
