Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: mulberry leaf extract at 500 mg per capsule. Mulberry leaf has been studied for its effects on blood sugar and other metabolic markers.

The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients — cellulose, silica, and vegetable stearate — which help bind and deliver the extract.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see White Mulberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy blood sugar and cardiovascular health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia.
  • The closest evidence on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: White Mulberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes).

The evidence for mulberry leaf extract isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate its use for androgenic alopecia (hair loss), bone health (osteoporosis), cold symptoms, blood sugar control (diabetes), or cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia).

If you're considering this supplement for any of these reasons, talk with your doctor about what the current research actually shows and whether it makes sense for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mulberry leaf extract is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects — bloating, gas, loose stools, and constipation — are mild and digestive; in one clinical study, they affected roughly half the participants at the start but tended to improve over the 12-week period, suggesting your body may adjust over time.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data on concentrated supplements to know either way. The safety notes advise against medicinal amounts in both cases.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — White Mulberry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 87 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take diabetes medications (there's a moderate risk of low blood sugar) or any OCT2 substrate drugs, particularly metformin, which may accumulate in your body if taken with mulberry leaf. Your provider can help you weigh the risks and plan any monitoring you might need.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Mulberry leaf extract is generally easy on the stomach, though a few weeks of mild bloating or loose stools is common at first. The real decision point is whether you take diabetes medication or drugs cleared through your kidneys — if you do, check those exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, the safety data just isn't there yet, so bring this question to your own healthcare provider.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

Mulberry Leaf Extract 500 mg by Best Naturals: Common Questions

Does Mulberry Leaf Extract 500 mg by Best Naturals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Mulberry Leaf Extract 500 mg has a known interaction with 87 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mulberry Leaf Extract 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this lower my blood sugar if I don't have diabetes?
Mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose in general, so theoretically there's a risk — though the safety data we hold doesn't detail what happens in people without diabetes. If you don't take diabetes medication and you're concerned, mention it to your doctor before starting, especially if you have a family history of blood sugar problems.
Is it safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data on concentrated mulberry leaf supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The safety information advises against medicinal amounts in both cases. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
What side effects should I watch for?
Mild digestive upset — bloating, gas, loose stools, or constipation — is the main thing. One study showed about half of people had bloating or gas early on, a quarter had loose stools, and a fifth had constipation, but these effects often eased as people continued taking it.
Does mulberry leaf really work for blood sugar or cholesterol?
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that it works for diabetes, high cholesterol, or any of the other conditions it's marketed for. If you're thinking about using it for blood sugar control, ask your doctor what the current research actually shows.
Is metformin safe to take with this?
Metformin and mulberry leaf interact at a moderate level. Animal studies show mulberry leaf can slow your kidneys' clearance of metformin, potentially raising it to higher levels in your blood. Don't add this supplement without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first — they can decide if it's okay for you and whether you need extra monitoring.
Why does the interaction list mention 87 medications if there's only one ingredient?
One ingredient can interact with many drugs, and mulberry leaf affects two entire drug categories — diabetes medications and a group of kidney-transport drugs (OCT2 substrates) — which together include 87 individual drugs. That's why the count is higher than you'd expect.
