Ocean Nectar Marine Phytoplankton contains 11 ingredients, of which several are active marine algaes and extracts. The main active ingredients are organic chlorella, Ascophyllum nodosum, astaxanthin, blue-green algae (spirulina species), and Kelp Pacific—all nutrient-dense sources harvested from the ocean.
These provide vitamins, minerals (especially iodine and potassium), carotenoids, and other plant compounds. The product also contains Dunaliella salina, Gigartina Red Marine Algae, Kombu, and another spirulina source.
Gelatin capsules hold the blend.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these ingredients varies widely. Blue-green algae (spirulina) is possibly effective for high blood pressure; chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.
For most other conditions—including age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, skin health, blood sugar control, and allergies—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate how well these algaes work. You'd be taking this product more as a whole-food nutrient source than for a proven therapeutic effect.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated short term, though quality and purity vary widely. The most common side effects are abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and flatus, especially in the first two weeks.
Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. The spirulina ingredients are also generally well tolerated, but can cause abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, and in rare cases anaphylaxis.
A few cases of mild bleeding or bruising occurred. Kelp and Ascophyllum can deliver very high iodine levels depending on the batch and source, and Kelp may contain arsenic from ocean waters.
The safety data for astaxanthin are limited long-term, and pregnancy and breastfeeding safety hasn't been established for astaxanthin, Ascophyllum, or the spirulinas.

If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, you'll want to discuss this with your pharmacist—chlorella is high in vitamin K and may reduce how well the drug works. Talk to your pharmacist too if you take thyroid medication (including antithyroid drugs or thyroid hormone replacement), potassium-sparing water pills, ACE inhibitors, digoxin for your heart, amiodarone for heart rhythm, diabetes medications, immunosuppressants, or aspirin or other blood thinners.

Ocean Nectar Marine Phytoplankton by Ormus Minerals contains several algae ingredients with documented interactions.
The most serious is chlorella's effect on warfarin (Coumadin): chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can reduce how well blood thinners work. At least one case shows warfarin becoming less effective after someone started chlorella.

Chlorella also carries a Moderate risk with photosensitizing drugs—medications that make your skin sensitive to sun. Chlorella itself can cause photosensitization, and using it alongside these drugs might add to that effect.
Ascophyllum nodosum, Kelp Pacific, and two spirulina ingredients (Hawaiian Spirulina pacifica and Spirulina Pacific) each bring multiple Moderate interactions. Ascophyllum and Kelp Pacific are both high in iodine and can interfere with antithyroid drugs, thyroid hormone replacement, and amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication).
Kelp Pacific also contains potassium and may increase potassium levels when combined with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or digoxin. The spirulina ingredients may theoretically increase bleeding risk with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, interfere with immunosuppressant drugs, or increase low blood sugar risk with diabetes medications.
Astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs broken down by two liver enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 substrates)—these are mostly theoretical effects not yet seen in people. We could not check Dunaliella salina, Gigartina Red Marine Algae, Kombu, or Spirulina.

Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
organic Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
Blue Green Algae
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
Kelp Pacific
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with ACEIs.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining laminaria with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with laminaria supplements, some of which may contain as much as 1000 mcg iodine, might increase the risk of adverse effects from iodine, including altered thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia, which could increase the effects and adverse effects of digoxin.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Thyroid Hormone
Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Ascophyllum nodosum
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining Ascophyllum nodosum with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
