HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Vitality Omega Man by Barlean's
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vitality Omega Man contains 9 active ingredients: a blend of polyunsaturated fats (including omega-3 and omega-6), oleic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, monounsaturated fat, beta-sitosterol, phosphatidylcholine, and plant phytosterols including campesterol and stigmasterol. The inactive ingredients are flaxseed oil, soy phospholipid concentrates, pumpkin seed oil, flaxseed particulate, additional plant sterols, sunflower oil, rosemary extract, and vitamin C.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Oleic acid is possibly effective for high cholesterol and heart disease.
Beta-sitosterol is likely effective for benign prostate enlargement (enlarged prostate) and possibly effective for familial high cholesterol and heart disease. Phosphatidylcholine is possibly effective for ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel condition), but the evidence is insufficient for fatty liver disease, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety.
The effectiveness data we hold doesn't cover all the omega ingredients in this blend.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-sitosterol is generally well tolerated short-term, but the safety data advises against its use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Common side effects from beta-sitosterol include constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, and nausea; it can occasionally worsen acne, and rare case reports mention acute pancreatitis.
Phosphatidylcholine is generally well tolerated, though high doses can cause digestive upset. Reported side effects include altered taste, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Oleic acid from food amounts is recognized as safe, but concentrated supplement doses are not well studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications) are the main concern — oleic acid may increase their effects and lower your blood sugar further. Because we couldn't check polyunsaturated fat, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, monounsaturated fat, campesterol, and stigmasterol, it's important to run your specific medications through the tool below to make sure nothing's missed.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This omega blend is built around fats and plant compounds that may help cholesterol and heart health. If you take diabetes medication, check with your pharmacist first because oleic acid may increase those drugs' effects.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the safety data is sparse for concentrated supplement use — discuss with your doctor before starting.

For each ingredient in Vitality Omega Man with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fat
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
