What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic neem powder. Neem (also called Indian lilac) is a plant extract traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine.
The powder contains no added fillers or inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports neem's use for a few specific concerns. It's possibly effective for gingivitis (inflamed gums) and dental plaque when used topically, and possibly effective against lice.
For acne and tungiasis (a parasitic skin infection), the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it. If you're thinking about neem for something else, the data we hold doesn't cover it — ask your doctor or pharmacist whether there's evidence for your particular use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Neem leaf powder appears generally well tolerated in adults when taken by mouth, though rigorous safety studies haven't been done. The main concern: neem oil and concentrated seed extracts can be toxic if swallowed, and neem oil can cause serious harm in children.
Topically, neem seems well tolerated, though sensitive skin may develop contact dermatitis. Rare serious effects with oral neem leaf in adults include heart rhythm problems and kidney damage; there's also a case report of hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) in someone with a blood disorder who drank large amounts of neem tea daily.
Neem should be avoided during pregnancy — the safety data advises against it. There isn't enough reliable information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so it's best to skip it during that time too.
If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood sugar-lowering drugs (like metformin), since neem may increase the risk of low blood sugar. You should also verify any medications that are broken down by your liver (CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C8, or CYP1A2 substrates), P-glycoprotein substrates, or immunosuppressants, because neem may raise their levels or reduce their effectiveness.
Use the search tool on this page to check your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Neem powder is possibly effective for gum inflammation and lice, and is generally well tolerated topically. However, it interacts with a very large number of medications, especially blood sugar drugs, so it's not something to start casually if you take any prescriptions.
If you do take medications — particularly diabetes drugs or immune-suppressing drugs — check your list with the tool on this page and talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before you begin. Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Organic Neem Powder by Nova Nutritions Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Organic Neem Powder by Nova Nutritions contains neem leaf extract, which interacts with a large number of medications across several drug categories.
The most serious concern is with blood sugar-lowering drugs (antidiabetes medications): neem may lower your blood glucose further, raising the risk of dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if you're already on metformin or other diabetes drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Neem also theoretically inhibits several liver enzymes that break down medications — CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C8, and CYP1A2 substrates — which could raise drug levels in your blood. Additionally, it may interfere with P-glycoprotein, a protein that moves drugs out of cells, potentially raising levels of affected medications.
And neem may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressants (drugs that calm your immune system). These enzyme and transporter effects have been seen in laboratory research but haven't yet been confirmed in humans.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,014 individual medications. Because neem affects so many common drug-breaking pathways, you'll want to check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting — and definitely talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any prescription drugs, especially diabetes medications or immune-suppressing drugs.
